The commercial sexual exploitation of children and young people within Cambodia has escalated over the last decade, into what is now an ‘industry’ utilized by foreign visitors (40%) and by a large domestic market.

Tragically, a large proportion of the girls and young women are knowingly sold to traffickers or brothels by their families, with children as young as four having been sold into the sex industry in Cambodia.

While the majority of girls are from Cambodia, around one third come from other countries, predominantly Vietnam.

Girls often want to escape, but are constrained by several factors:

  • they have nowhere safe to go;
  • the family depends on their earnings, so there is great pressure to continue;
  • there is huge shame and stigma from society outside the industry.

Daughters seeks to help girls with finding viable alternative options for their lives.
