What We Do and Why?
Daughters NGO offers a new approach to eradicating enslavement in sexual exploitation in Cambodia. Daughters operates a day-centre in an area of brothels, where activities and programmes are designed to empower victims of sexual exploitation to set themselves free from enslavement through employment opportunities, and a wide range of social and psychological services.
Programs Include:
Small businesses:
- Fair Trade businesses providing salaried jobs
- Free daycare
- mall businesses include The Sewing Room which produces fashion accessories, home furnishings and clothing, silk screen printed products, spa skills, jewellery production and baking.
- At Daughters there are up to 70 clients at any one time. Around 80% are employed in The Sewing Room.
Social and psychological services
- General medical clinic for clients
- Ante-natal clinic. Weekly pregnancy clinic & pre-natal classes.
- Referral partners for specialised medical treatment
- Education in nutrition, health, hygiene & HIV prevention.
- Counselling clinic
- Art therapy group sessions
- Social support services providing help with domestic problems. Sometimes referrals are made to partners for specialist services, such as legal advice in cases of domestic violence
Creative Classes
A range of creative classes are held, to build self-esteem, facilitate expression and empower girls with inner resources for healthy decision-making;
- psychological healing. These include; Khmer dance, hip-hop dance, photography, art, design, computer classes, etc.
- Weekly Life-skills workshops teaching skills in functional living. Topics include; domestic violence prevention, conflict resolution, budgeting, etc.
- Church on-site each week for girls who are interested in becoming Christians. Attendance is voluntary.
